Jefferson County has:
- Over 3,100 miles of sewer lines
- 170 pumping stations
- 9 wastewater treatment plants.
The sewer service areas extend to the more heavily populated areas of the County.
The County sewer system serves an estimated population of 478,246.
Act No. 714 of the Alabama Legislature, enacted February 28, 1901 authorized the construction, maintenance and operation of a sewage disposal system in Jefferson County by the Jefferson County Sanitary Commission.
The System is subject to the requirements of the Clean Water Act and the conditions set forth in the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit applicable to each of the wastewater treatment plants. In addition, the System is subject to regulation by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF PRODUCT REVIEW COMMITTEE MEETINGS
The Product Review Committee (PRC) was formed in response to the need to consider alternative and competitive rehabilitation products for the Jefferson County sanitary sewer system. The purpose of the PRC is to investigate and evaluate products to determine their acceptability for use in the Jefferson County sanitary sewer system. The PRC serves in an investigative and advisory capacity to the Jefferson County Commission. The PRC meets the first Thursday of each month at 2:00 pm at the Jefferson County Courthouse, 716 Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd. North, Suite A-300, in a meeting which is open to the public.

Environmental Services Department (ESD) is the joint responsibility of Commissioners Jim Carns (Chairman), William A. Bell, Sr., and Bettye Fine Collins. The ESD includes, in part, the overall operational management of the Sanitary Sewer System.

Do you have a sewer emergency?
Please note: Only sanitary sewer problems should be reported to the hotline below. Problems with storm sewers, which collect rainwater runoff, etc., should be reported to the appropriate city department (Streets, Sanitation, Public Works). You can find phone numbers to city departments listed in the blue pages of the telephone directory.

We work very hard to repair and maintain county sewers under a planned schedule. However, sudden problems can occur. When they do, we have staff ready to assist you 24 hours a day at the maintenance hotline above.
Also: For sanitary sewer lines, the County's maintenance jurisdiction covers the sewer main only. The sewer main is usually located under the street. The homeowner is generally responsible for the service line - the pipe connecting the home's waste plumbing to the sewer main. If the problem is in the service line (such as roots, other blockage, pipe break, etc.), the homeowner should contact a plumber for help.
