Private meters are secondary water meters installed by the customer (at their expense) to measure non-sewer uses such as lawn irrigation systems, pools, etc.

Note: When a customer begins the private meter program, they lose the 15% automatic discount. All residential customers automatically receive a 15% discount on their sewer bill for non-wastewater producing activities.

A private meter must be registered with the Jefferson County Environmental Services Department. When calling to register, you will need the name of your water provider (Birmingham Water Works Board, Bessemer Utilities, Trussville Utilities, etc.) and your water account number.  The meter reading begins when an inspector has registered the meter. A reading must then be submitted every six months. If a meter reading is over one year old, the meter must be re-registered.

For more information on the private meter program or other related questions, please call 205-325-5138 or 205-325-8732.

Existing customers may request a private meter form by sending an e-mail to crenshaj@jccal.org or vanceme@jccal.orgPlease be sure to include your full name, mailing address, physical address, and phone number.

Do you have a sewer emergency?

Please note: Only sanitary sewer problems should be reported to the hotline below.  Problems with storm sewers, which collect rainwater runoff, etc., should be reported to the appropriate city department (Streets, Sanitation, Public Works). You can find phone numbers to city departments listed in the blue pages of the telephone directory.

Sewer Line Maintenance (24 hours)

205-942-0681

We work very hard to repair and maintain county sewers under a planned schedule. However, sudden problems can occur. When they do, we have staff ready to assist you 24 hours a day at the maintenance hotline above.

Also: For sanitary sewer lines, the County's maintenance jurisdiction covers the sewer main only. The sewer main is usually located under the street. The homeowner is generally responsible for the service line - the pipe connecting the home's waste plumbing to the sewer main. If the problem is in the service line (such as roots, other blockage, pipe break, etc.), the homeowner should contact a plumber for help.
